Vintage 101: Vintage at the Pit Open

Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of Vintage 101! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we're going to be taking a small look at the Vintage event ran at The Legacy Pit Open II this past weekend in Richmond, VA! In addition to that we've got two Challenges to discuss and of course a Spice Corner.

Without further ado let's dive right in!

Vintage in the Pit of Legacy

This past weekend The Legacy Pit Open II was held in Richmond, VA at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. As part of this celebration of Eternal Magic, a full on Vintage event was held on the Sunday of the Pit Open II. You can find out more information about The Legacy Pit themselves over at their Twitter. This event did allow a number of proxies to be used and was thus unsanctioned.

This event ended up having 40 players overall, with a Top 8 that was split 8 ways with a draw to the finals for glory sake. There were some super fun decks in this Top 8 so let's take a look at the lists we have available.

Deck Name Placing Player Name
Aggro Shops 1st Mark Hollaar
Oath of Druids 2nd Adam Grosse
Paradoxical Outcome 3rd Matt Paquet
Esper Tinker 4th Rachel Feingersh
Doomsday 5th Hank Zhong
Elves 6th Ryan Fisher
Grixis Sheoldred 7th Jeremy Pinter
Oath of Druids 8th William Berry

There's some definitely solid players in this Top 8 and some super cool lists. I'm going to poke through these as they are listed, as the Top 8 was split with the two finals players playing it out for glory purposes. The recorded First Place here was Mark Hollaar on Aggro Shops.

Loading Indicator

This is very much what we've come to expect from Aggro Shops builds, with sweet cards like Patchwork Automaton and Nettlecyst. Also, Unlicensed Hearse continues to make waves in this deck as well. Plus, that decklist pic is super sweet (as provided by the pilot themselves on the Vintage Streamer's Discord).

The recorded Second Place was Oath.

Loading Indicator

A sighting by Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes in Oath! This list is super sweet and feels much like a Miharu list in general. Maddening Hex in the sideboard is also super sweet.

There was also a sweet Saga-less PO list in this Top 8 by Matt Paquet (decklist provided by pilot in the Vintage Streamer's Discord).

Loading Indicator

Utilizing Dress Down here as the game plan versus Saga decks and focusing more on the PO game plan is solid. This is very much a Justin Gennari-esque list for sure.

Also down the Top 8 there was an ELVES list by Ryan Fisher.

Loading Indicator

This list is sweet as all get out. New card Leaf-Crowned Visionary showing up here as a powerful one-of to enable extra Glimpse action is super cool. Absolutely stunning.

The last list we'll look at here is our good friend Jeremy Pinter playing SHEOLDRED WHEELS (decklist provided by pilot in Vintage Streamer's Discord).

Loading Indicator

This list is super cool. Sheoldred, the Apocalypse in conjunction with Wheel effects is absolutely nutty, and in general as a card that is pretty beefy stat-wise as a 4/5 with an immediate effect on the game by forcing the opponent having to have an answer immediately to it and putting a crimp on cantrips is very strong. This is another Justin Gennari special, really showcasing the powerful effect this guy has had on Vintage deckbuilding for paper events for sure.

Vintage Challenge 10/1

The first Vintage Challenge of the weekend was the mid-afternoon Saturday event. This event had 55 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Vintage Streamer's Discord.

You can find all of the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the datasheet here.

Tinker was overly represented but it's win rate was less than stellar. Breach had a solid performance here, as did BUG.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
BUG Midrange 1st GGoggles
4C DRS 2nd Dazai
Breach 3rd Vertyx_
Goblins 4th grumsh
Mono White Aggro 5th Grymn
Oath of Druids 6th Miharu_Fuyumiya
Lurrus Standstill 7th dancingjesus191
Hollow Vine 8th _Milhouse

This is a wild Top 8 with some strong players and some sweet decks. At the end of the event though it was BUG Midrange that took it all down.

Loading Indicator

This is a pretty solid list with some very straightforward deckbuilding decisions. I am loving the Liliana in the sideboard here. Don't see her too much anymore, so that is sweet.

The Second Place finalist was on 4C DRS.

Loading Indicator

Minsc & Boo sighting! This is a super sweet list. Also the two Fury in the sideboard is super cool.

Also in this Top 8 we had some Goblins action!

Loading Indicator

I love this deck a ton. Goblins having a real combo kill now in this format is super great and I dig it.

Vintage Challenge 10/2

The second Challenge of the weekend was the early morning Sunday event. This event had 57 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Vintage Streamer's Discord.

You can find all of the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Breach was well represented here and it had a very positive win rate overall. 4C DRS decks and PO also did quite well, while Tinker and Jeskai did poorly.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Tinker Breach 1st kasa
Hogaak 2nd hopeof130
UR Murktide 3rd jaredallsop619
4C DRS 4th Dazai
Breach 5th zhinonono
Doomsday 6th Wyjx
Paradoxical Outcome 7th RespectTheCat
Breach 8th HouseOfManaMTG

This is a very interesting Top 8, with some Breach going on plus some UR Murktide. At the end of the event it was Tinker Breach that won.

Loading Indicator

This is a solidly straightforward list here. Multiple angles of attack here and plenty of ways to win.

The Second Place finalist was on Hogaak.

Loading Indicator

Back on the red splash here it seems, which I've personally really found worked quite well for this deck. Double the Rootwallas is always great.

Also in this Top 8 we have UR Murktide.

Loading Indicator

This deck really utilizes many of the newer and more powerful threats and makes Murktide Regent very strong in the current format. Very powerful list here for sure.
