This Week in Legacy: Trapped in Suspense
Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of This Week in Legacy! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we're finishing up our look at Duskmourn for Legacy! In addition to that we've got some Challenge data to discuss from this past week.
I would like to note that this week is the Duskmourn Early Access Event on Magic Online! I will be on during my regular time around 7:00 PM - 7:30 PM EST this Thursday night playing some Legacy with other content creators in the event. Stop by and check out what some of the new cards from Duskmourn may do to the format!
Without further ado, let's dive right in!
Horror-fying
We finally have the entire spoiler for Duskmourn and the associated Commander set, so we can finish up our look at these sets for Legacy related purposes. There isn't a bunch, but there are some unique Commander cards to look at (since we already looked at Metamorphosis Fanatic last week).
Ancient Cellarspawn
This card is super interesting for three mana. Casting Force of Will for its alt cost here will dome the opponent for five life. I don't know if this is good or not, but I think it's pretty cool and I want to play a Dark Ritual deck with Bolas's Citadel with this.
Chainsaw
Kind of a cool Welder target, for as good as a Lightning Bolt is these days. This could be a fun card to play around with though for Welder/Engineer shenanigans.
Deluge of Doom
I feel like this is not as good as it might seem. Toxic Deluge isn't very good right now either, and if it ever does get good again, that's likely a better card for a resource than this.
Ghost Vacuum
Kind of a super goofy Saga target, imo. Repeated graveyard hate and then able to put multiple creatures into play for a big late game cost is cute.
Into the Pit
At the first glance of this I thought this said that you could cast spells by sacrificing nonland permanents, at which point that would have been sweet, but re-reading it, I don't think this is playable.
Silent Hallcreeper
Another 1U evasive threat?! Must be great! (This is sarcasm, obviously). I've been burned by these ones before, so I don't think this is any good at all.
Walk-In Closet // Forgotten Cellar
A Crucible that isn't an artifact in green is pretty neat, since green is often the color wanting a Crucible, but then for five mana it becomes a Yawgmoth's Will for a turn? Might be cool, to be honest.
Phenomenon Investigators
I WANT TO BELIEVE.
Legacy Challenge 32 9/11
The first Challenge of the week was the Wednesday event. According to the MTGO website, this event had 47 players in it. There was no data for this event.
You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here. The Top 8 is below.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Sneak and Show | 1st | DethFrmAbove |
Eldrazi | 2nd | Jumba |
Eldrazi | 3rd | Varal |
Eldrazi | 4th | NMT_Sco94 |
Eldrazi | 5th | musasabi |
Stiflenought | 6th | Rav92 |
UB Reanimator | 7th | 2plus2isfive |
Death and Taxes (Non-Yorion) | 8th | Perez |
Eldrazi being 4/8 of the Top 8 here is pretty insane. This one makes me wish I'd had the full data on just to see the full breadth of this kind of effect. At the end of the event though it was Sneak and Show that won.
Fairly interesting take here on this. I like the addition of The One Ring and Vexing Bauble as a way to protect your combo. It's a little awkward with your Lotus Petal but I think if you are deploying Bauble you know that.
In Second Place we had Eldrazi.
It's still very interesting how things continue to be all over the place for this deck. I continue to see multiple lists of this that all look different. I do think however that we are seeing some coalescing to likely this build as the green versions in general seem to be one of the most consistent variants.
Further down the Top 8 was Stiflenought.
I like this list. Consign to Memory seems very good in these decks, as it's just a very flexible version of Stifle for this deck that also hits other triggered abilities while also being good versus Eldrazi.
Legacy Challenge 32 9/13
The second Challenge of the week was the Friday night/early Saturday event. According to the MTGO website, this event had 45 players in it. There was no data for this event.
You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here. The Top 8 is below.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Red Stompy | 1st | yPrincipe |
Death and Taxes (Yorion) | 2nd | xJCloud |
UB Reanimator | 3rd | 2plus2isfive |
UB Reanimator | 4th | death_grips |
Eldrazi | 5th | Raydan |
Cephalid Breakfast | 6th | Genericana |
UB Reanimator | 7th | 532at |
Mystic Forge Combo | 8th | Nictophobia |
Pretty interesting Top 8 with a big smattering of UB Reanimator. At the end of the event it was Red Stompy that won.
Pyrogoyf definitely seems quite good in this deck especially with all the cards like Bauble and the MDFCs enabling some more card types in the graveyard so that it can be very big when it ETBs.
In Second Place we had Death and Taxes.
The red splash here is pretty cool. Broadside Bombardiers is super sweet here, in addition to having Magus of the Moon versus many decks in the format right now. I also love Ajani, Nacatl Pariah here.
Also in this Top 8 we had Cephalid Breakfast.
Pretty interesting take on Nadu Breakfast. Memory's Journey is a super sweet card here that gets around graveyard hate.
Legacy Challenge 32 9/14
The third Challenge of the week was the early morning Saturday event. According to the MTGO website, this event had 51 players in it. There was no data for this event.
You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here. The Top 8 is below.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Eldrazi | 1st | Dreddybajs |
Mystic Forge Combo | 2nd | buildorburn |
Eldrazi | 3rd | LillHalonen |
ANT | 4th | DemonicTutors |
Worldgorger | 5th | Ale_Ax95 |
Red Painter | 6th | kanican |
Dimir Tempo | 7th | Ark4n |
Eldrazi | 8th | rasvd |
Really neat Top 8 here. At the end of the event it was Eldrazi that won.
As noted, things do seem to be coalescing to this style of list. It seems to have the most consistent mana across the variants thus far, and while Eldrazi Linebreaker is really aggressive, the addition of red does seem to stretch hard on it.
In Second Place we had Mystic Forge Combo.
Glaring Fleshraker as a combo card that enables Mystic Forge to kill even faster is kind of nuts. This list has a lot of power behind it.
Also in this Top 8 we had ANT.
Pretty sweet more old school list with Burning Wish and not even a Beseech the Mirror. Super sweet.
Legacy Challenge 32 9/15
The fourth Challenge of the week was the Sunday 32 player event. This event had 39 players in it thanks to the data collected by the Legacy Data Collection Project.
You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
Dimir Tempo was super popular and had a strong win rate. UB Reanimator also had a really good win rate. A lot of other decks rode the middle to low end of things here.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
UB Reanimator | 1st | makusong24 |
Cephalid Breakfast | 2nd | MisterAsiago |
Eldrazi | 3rd | _Batutinha_ |
Dimir Tempo | 4th | _INF_ |
Grixis Delver | 5th | JoyfulWaffle |
Naya Stompy | 6th | motown4 |
Eldrazi | 7th | Jumba |
UB Reanimator | 8th | Maxtortion |
Fairly diverse really. At the end of the event it was UB Reanimator that won.
Pretty solid looking list here. This feels like a really strong place for UB to be at the moment.
In Second Place we had Cephalid Breakfast.
Similar list to the other one we looked at already. Having the Saga backup plan makes a lot of sense here.
Further down the Top 8 we had Naya Stompy.
Bombardiers and Pyrogoyf backed up by Minsc & Boo? Wow. This is cool.
Legacy Challenge 64 9/15
The final Challenge of the week was the 64 player Sunday event. According to the MTGO website, this event had 72 players in it. There was no data for this event.
You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Dimir Tempo | 1st | silviawataru |
Red Painter | 2nd | kanican |
Beanstalk Control (Non-Yorion) | 3rd | nakis13 |
Red Painter | 4th | WallOfSpikes |
UB Reanimator | 5th | Ozymandias17 |
Dimir Tempo | 6th | _INF_ |
Eldrazi | 7th | SuperCow12653 |
UR Delver | 8th | stu909090 |
Pretty cool Top 8 here. At the end of the event it was Dimir Tempo that won.
Really powerful looking list here. I am digging Threads of Disloyalty in the sideboard here.
In Second Place we had Red Painter.
Strong looking list here. Four copies of Vexing Bauble is pretty gross, but it makes a lot of sense right now.
At the bottom of the Top 8 we had UR Delver.
Haven't seen a straight UR Delver list in a while. Lightning Bolt making a comeback!

I'm starting to work on a new series called "What Does This Deck Do?" as small bite sized videos about various decks in the Legacy format, with the first one on Legacy Tempo decks.
