This Week in Legacy: Spacing Out

Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of This Week in Legacy! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we're going to SPACE! It's Edge of Eternities set review time, so we get to see what this set has to offer for Legacy. In addition, we've got some Challenges to discuss as well as the Oklahoma Land Run Legacy Open.

Without further ado, let's dive right in!

Edge of Eternities for Legacy

We're headed to SPACE! That's right, it's time for a set review and with Magic's first foray into Space Fantasy with Edge of Eternities. This set has some new mechanics like always, such as Warp (a mechanic that allows you to pay a cheaper cost for a card for one turn, then it gets exiled, and then you can pay the full up front cost later on to cast it from exile), Station (like Crew, but BIGGER), and Void (caring about nonland permanents leaving the battlefield or a spell being warped). In addition, Landfall is back!

There isn't a ton to this set, and realistically cards with Station (especially Spacecraft) are all too slow for Legacy.

We already covered one specific card from this set in the form of Tezzeret, Cruel Captain, so let's see what else this set has to offer!

Anticausal Vestige

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

This set has exactly one Sliver card and one Eldrazi card. This is... interesting? It has its moments of being a four mana draw a card, but it's really bad if you're cheating on mana. This wants you to be on four lands so you can drop like a Thought-Knot Seer the same turn, but like... that's usually not the case for Eldrazi since the deck plays tons of ways to cheat on mana like Eldrazi Temple and Eye of Ugin. It really is just a four mana draw a card at best, and if you're doing that... The One Ring is right there.

Its also worth noting (and worth noting for all of the cards with the Warp mechanic) that Warping does not give the creature haste or allow it to attack, so its not like you're even getting a 4 mana 7/5 that draws a card that deals 7 that turn (that would be kind of dope, but no).

Astelli Reclaimer

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Realistically I don't believe this to be great, but its effects are neat. On its Warp end, you're getting a three mana or less creature from the graveyard, and on the back you're going to get a five mana or less. The awkward downside is you do have to spend mana on this to get the effect, which makes things like Aether Vial useless with it.

Lightstall Inquisitor

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

This is interesting, but it has a few things running against it. First, the opponent chooses which card to exile which is rough because they can choose the weakest card. Secondly it's a 2/1, so Bowmasters is a thing. Probably not very good.

Seam Rip

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

A Portable Hole that is an enchantment is intriguing. The thing about Portable Hole though, is most of those shells are also Karn, the Great Creator shells where it can tutor for it. I can't think of a deck that really wants this.

Temporal Intervention

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

So basically this card costs B if you had a nonland permanent leave the battlefield or warped a spell that turn. What's good for that? Mishra's Bauble and Urza's Bauble basically turns this into Thoughtseize without the life loss. I don't know if that is good, but it is interesting.

Tannuk, Steadfast Second

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

So honestly, this is kind of silly with a lot of the ETB threats that Red Stompy plays like Pyrogoyf, and it might be asking too much but you can Warp in a Blightsteel Colossus and since Tannuk gives it all haste, that seems pretty sweet. I'd love to see something silly like this see play.

Frenzied Baloth

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

I actually don't think this is very good, because the kinds of decks it would go in are having a hard go at existing. If things shift down the line, though this could be an interesting card.

Icetill Explorer

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

This is certainly a neat card, combining additional land drops with a Crucible of Worlds effect that also mills. I don't know where it goes though in this current climate.

Cosmogoyf

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

I actually think this is more amusing in Vintage where you can Demonic Consultation in response to an unblocked Goyf and win the game, but this would be goofy as a Doomsday backup threat that just suddenly wins the game out of nowhere.

Pinnacle Emissary

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

The Warp cost on this is pretty low, which makes it intriguing since you can Warp it in for U/R and then cast a bunch of 0 drop artifact spells to get the triggers. This might actually be pretty cool.

The Dominion Bracelet

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Phyrexian Dreadnought and this seem like best friends. This is not good, but I also want someone to do it.

Thrumming Hivepool

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

In actual Slivers (which we haven't seen for a while) this card almost always probably routinely costs 4 or less, which is pretty cool. Seems like it could be neat in that deck specifically.

Station Lands

$ 0.00 $ 0.00   $ 0.00 $ 0.00

The Station mechanic here is just far too rough for these things to be good. Unless you are doing Dreadnought shenanigans it's not worth the effort.

Oklahoma Land Run 2025 Legacy Open

This past weekend as part of the Oklahoma Land Run event series, there was a large Legacy Open event, This event had a solid 140-player turnout. You can find out all about the OK Land Run events over at their website.

You can find all the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Dimir Reanimator was the major standout of the entire event, coming in at close to 20% of the metagame and also boasting a 60.27% non-mirror win rate, which is absolutely insane. To put into perspective, the next most played deck of Izzet Tempo had a terrible 42.86% non-mirror win rate, which is astounding to see. Both Cephalid Breakfast and Nadu Midrange had some solid results, but really this was Reanimator's world and we're just living in it.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing Player Name
Dimir Reanimator 1st Jacob Milchman
Dimir Reanimator 2nd Ryan Waligora
Dimir Reanimator 3rd Tom Hertfelder
Dimir Reanimator 4th Lee Webb
Mystic Forge Combo 5th Shadowuni
Cephalid Breakfast 6th Harrison Masta
Nadu Midrange Combo 7th Charlie Stein
Dimir Reanimator 8th Tyler Ragels

And yep, Reanimator not only being 5/8 of the Top 8, but also making up the ENTIRE Top 4 is just outstanding. Let's take a peek at the winner's list.

Loading Indicator

This is pretty much what we have to consider stock for this list. The main deck Nihil Spellbomb is just a huge nod to the fact that the mirror is very prevalent in the format right now.

Legacy Challenge 32 7/16/2025

The first Challenge event of the week was the Wednesday event. This event had 50 players in it, thanks to the MTGO website.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Dimir Reanimator was the most played deck but its win rate was less than 50% despite two Top 8 appearances. Oops had a positive win rate, but did not Top 8. The standout here was Mystic Forge Combo.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Mystic Forge Combo 1st musasabi
Selesnya Depths 2nd SuperCow12653
Dimir Reanimator 3rd Munchlax446
Dimir Reanimator 5th makusong24
Tron Stompy 6th Gogo1984
Lands 7th maximusdee
Red Stompy 8th Sarlanga

Fair bit of Land based strategies here, but at the end of the event it was Mystic Forge Combo that won.

Loading Indicator

I have to imagine that this deck only gets better when Tezzeret, Cruel Captain arrives. It seems pretty tailor-made for this deck since it can untap things and tutor for things. Being able to tutor for a Key is great.

In Second Place we had Selesnya Depths.

Loading Indicator

This is pretty sweet. Endurance is a card I think more people should be playing more of right now. It blocks Tamiyo and kills her, it's nicely square out of range for Orcish Bowmasters and stonewalls Kaito, all while dealing with the opponent's graveyard to clear away fodder for Murktide or Reanimator targets. Just in general it seems like a very powerful card at the moment that not enough people are actually investing in.

Legacy Challenge 32 7/18/2025

The second Challenge event of the week was the Friday event. This event had 39 players in it thanks to the MTGO website.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Dimir Reanimator was the most played deck, and its win rate was in the range of 65.96% non-mirror. Izzet Tempo here suffered hard.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Eldrazi 1st FranMtg
Dimir Reanimator 2nd habsburger
Dimir Reanimator 3rd kentaro_hokori
Oops! All Spells 4th TheGrimLavamancer
Dimir Reanimator 5th Munchlax446
Dimir Reanimator 6th Termahgerf
Naya Stompy 7th kozz27
Red Stompy 8th Add1ct3d

Another event where Dimir had a huge chunk of the Top 8. At the end of the event though it was Eldrazi that won.

Loading Indicator

Ugin is kind of a wildly interesting toss-in here, but holy cow if you can drop it, you're definitely winning the game. What really helps it here is Grim Monolith for sure.

In Second Place we had Dimir Reanimator.

Loading Indicator

Yep. This is a deck. Energy Flux is kind of interesting though as a sideboard option.

Legacy Challenge 32 7/19/2025

The third Challenge event of the week was the Saturday event. This event had 34 players in it thanks to the MTGO website.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Dimir Reanimator was again the most popular deck of the event. Its win rate was still very good. Dimir Tempo also looked good here.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Jeskai Control 1st viktor_von_muerte
Dimir Reanimator 2nd PivoUlivo
Beanstalk Control (Yorion) 3rd Sneaky_Cat
Dimir Tempo 4th chouqin
Dimir Tempo 5th kirdiekirdie
Red Stompy 6th choutin
Dimir Reanimator 7th _INF_
Natural Order 8th Carroz

This seems a bit better with still a small bit of Reanimator and also Dimir Tempo. At the end of the event though it was Jeskai Control that won.

Thundertrap Trainer is a dope card, and I love seeing that it's seeing play. This is exactly the kind of shell I like to see this card in, because it gets to leverage Flame of Anor as well and that's superb.

In Second Place we had Dimir Reanimator.

Loading Indicator

Cling to Dust as a main deck graveyard hate piece that amusingly enough you can Entomb for and then Escape is sort of intriguing honestly.

Legacy Challenge 32 7/20/2025 - 1

The fourth Challenge event of the week was the first Sunday event. This event had 34  players in it thanks to the MTGO website.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Dimir Reanimator's metagame share and win rate was kind of silly here, and its conversion rate into the Top 8 even moreso.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Dimir Reanimator 1st Munchlax446
Dimir Reanimator 2nd Suzukiii
Dimir Reanimator 3rd 2plus2isfive
Dimir Reanimator 4th Maxtortion
Dimir Reanimator 5th Ryuho090
Sneak and Show 6th snoopy-magic
Eldrazi 7th albertoSD
Red Stompy 8th Kaziku

Wow uh... you folks in the chat think this deck is good? Or just you know... cards people like playing?

Here's both lists for posterity, but we all know what's in these decks.

Legacy Challenge 32 7/20/2025 - 2

The final Challenge event of the week was the second Sunday event. This event had 63 players in it thanks to the MTGO website.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Dimir Reanimator again was super present, and despite a Top 8 appearance, it had around a 47% win rate. Doomsday looked great here, as did Lands.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Dimir Tempo 1st kirdiekirdie
Doomsday 2nd wonderPreaux
Lands 3rd alli
Selesnya Depths 4th SuperCow12653
Dimir Reanimator 5th _INF_
Selesnya Depths 6th Sol-e22558
Bant Control (Non-Yorion) 7th izzy-wilde
Dimir Tempo 8th minyafriend

This seems a lot more reasonable. At the end of the event it was Dimir Tempo that won.

Loading Indicator

This is rather straightforward and what we've come to expect out of the Dimir Tempo builds. Nethergoyf continues to be a severely strong one mana threat.

In Second Place we had Doomsday.

Loading Indicator

Tamiyo as a tempo option is pretty gross for a deck like this. Also, being in Esper and getting to play Teferi seems quite good.

Around the Web

  • Bryant Cook is playing some Entomb TES. Check it out here.
  • JamesKisau keeps playing Grixis Control. Check it out here.
  • StrassDaddy is playing MARDU. Check it out here.
