This Week in Legacy: Sling Us a Web You're the Spider-Man

Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of This Week in Legacy! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we're getting all webbed up and taking a look at Spider-Man for our Legacy Set Review. In addition we've got some Challenges to discuss from last weekend. Also we've got some Eternal Weekend News!

Without further ado, let's dive right in!

Cuz We're All in the Mood for a Hero Now, and We Think That You'll Do Just Fine

Yet another Standard set is on the horizon, with our second ever Universes Beyond set in the form of Spider-Man. Now there is some weirdness for this one. This set will not exist as it appears in paper Magic cards on Magic Online. Due to some of the licensing issues, this set will only exist on MTGO as Through the Omenpaths, and won't include a lot of the Spider-Man goodness. We don't have the full conversion spoiler for this unfortunately yet (not that I am aware of), so we have to look at these cards as Spider-Man for the time being, but just be aware of this!

There's a lot going on in this set, so let's take a look and see if there's anything that could be available for Legacy (in no particular order).

Secret Identity

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

The art here is so great, kudos to RK Post. The card itself is interesting. It's a lot like Scale Up in Infect where it makes the creature larger with Evasion (and Vigilance which is kind of nuts) OR it turns the creature into a base 1/1 with hexproof so it can protect from removal as well. Given that a lot of the Infect dorks are 1/1s anyways this hardly matters, and it does all this for only one blue while also being pitchable to Force. The rate here isn't bad, so I'm sure Fenruscloud will be testing this one.

Raging Goblinoids

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Mayhem is sort of like a fixed Madness. You pitch the card and you can cast it from your graveyard for usually a reduced cost. What stinks about it is the fact that unlike Madness, timing rules apply and you fall prey to cards like Grafdigger's Cage and actual graveyard hate. The upside of these guys is it works well with Lion's Eye Diamond so if you can avoid those pitfalls, getting a 5/4 Haste threat that you cast (which is important for Vengevine) is pretty sweet.

Realistically though, I doubt this goes anywhere with a format where people are main decking graveyard hate for Dimir Reanimator PLUS the fact that these decks are fringer than fringe.

Norman Osborn

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

I mean, if you can flip him, we just broke One with Nothing, right?

Ultimate Green Goblin

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Another big Mayhem threat you can cast off Lion's Eye Diamond. This one kind of enables it in some ways with the upkeep trigger, but I loathe having to wait to do things with creatures right now in Legacy.

Spider-Sense

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Now this is an interesting card. Sort of like a miniature Stifle effect, except that you can alternatively cast it for U and return a tapped creature instead. The problem here is that it does have to be a tapped creature, which hurts if you want to say, bounce a Bowmasters and recast it to boost your damage output by another one damage.

It's probably not good, but it is a neat effect.

Spider-Punk

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Okay then. Discounting the fact that it's giving your Spiders riot, the fact that it makes literally everything uncounterable and makes it so damage can't be prevented is incredibly sweet. Oh and don't let the 2/1 stats fool you, this guy having Riot himself means he's almost always entering as a 3/2.

This is one I could reasonably see finding some purchase in the Red Stompy decks. Making all of your things uncounterable is incredibly powerful and a 1R? Yeah, that's pretty good.

Spectacular Spider-Man

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Kind of like a Selfless Spirit in a way, but it has flash which is pretty interesting.

Symbiote Spider-Man

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

One thing I appreciate about this guy is that it really works best from the graveyard. You can surveil this and then use its ability to put a counter on something like a Murktide, and now your Murktide gets to mega-surveil every turn. It's probably too cute, but whew, is that kind of card selection something?

Mister Negative

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Someone do some goofy Worldgorger Dragon loop with this guy, stat.

Spider-Woman, Stunning Savior

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

There was a time in Legacy where an effect like this would be lovely. Unfortunately I think current Legacy might be a bit too fast for this effect, but it is very solid on rate across the board, both on stats and ability. It does pitch to Force so who knows, we could see this show up somewhere.

Steel Wrecking Ball

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

This is probably the best card in the set for Painter players. The shenanigans of Goblin Welder are limitless here. You can just keep welding this in and out and dealing 5 damage to other creatures, and it comes with a built-in way to discard it that also shatters an artifact (oh such as maybe Cori-Steel Cutter?) This is really interesting, and I'm curious to see what it does.

Gwenom, Remorseless

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

It's like a creature version of Bolas's Citadel, but you have to attack first. Granted she does have Deathtouch and Lifelink, but still. I doubt it sees play, but the effect is neat and unique since we've never seen it on a creature before.

Shadow of the Goblin

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

I mean, both effects here are interesting, and you do get to do some interesting things with its second trigger, but for the most part it feels wonky in the current Legacy format. I think it could be fun for some really interesting combo decks though.

Peter Parker's Camera

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Someone tried to pitch this in Mystic Forge, but I don't see it. Nine times out of ten the card you get with Saga is going to be a Key, which will do what you want it to anyways, and if you have something really busted to copy then you're probably already winning the game.

I don't think this one is very good, even if Peter is great at taking pictures of Spider-Man.

Rent is Due

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Ah the bane of all Magic players' existence: paying rent. So flavorful!

Paintings for Eternal Weekend North America

We all know that last year, Wizards ended the function of doing paintings for Eternal Weekend events across North America, Europe, and Asia. Paintings have long been a big tradition of Eternal Weekend, and so legendary artist Dan Frazier decided this year to do it himself. According to this post by Mark Aronowitz, Dan painted two different paintings (Mox Sapphire for Vintage, Mox Diamond for Legacy) for this year's North American Eternal Weekend, in addition to selling playmats at the event of the art as well. The paintings will go respectively to the winners of the NA Vintage Champs and NA Legacy Champs.

This is such a super sick thing of Dan Frazier to do for the community. Thank you so much Dan for continuing one of EW's most treasured and awesome traditions!

Legacy Challenge 32 9/3/2025

The first Challenge event of the week was the Wednesday event. This event had 42 players in it thanks to the MTGO website.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Dimir Reanimator was the most played deck of the event, and it's win rate was pretty good. Red Stompy also did well here, as did Dimir Tempo. Oops did very poorly here, as did D&T.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Dimir Tempo 1st DrPP
Dimir Reanimator 2nd C_S_W____
Red Stompy 3rd choutin
Dimir Reanimator 4th Munchlax446
Lands 5th Sprouts
Dimir Tempo 6th parkss
Izzet Tempo 7th O_danielakos
Red Stompy 8th novaschin22

Lot of Dimir overall, including both Dimir Tempo pilots in Top 8. Dimir Tempo won the overall event!

Loading Indicator

Main deck Nihil Spellbomb makes a ton of sense when you are expecting so much Reanimator. Bitter Triumph is also a nice removal option in a deck that really is only otherwise playing main deck Fatal Push.

In Second Place we had Dimir Reanimator.

Loading Indicator

Very much a stock looking list overall here.

Legacy Challenge 32 9/5/2025

The second Challenge event of the week was the Friday event. This event had 34 players in it thanks to the MTGO website.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here. There was no data for this event.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Dimir Reanimator 1st Ozymandias17
Red Stompy 2nd monzatubarao
Other Control 3rd pokemoki
Blue Painter 4th TeaW1thRum
Cephalid Breakfast 5th Harry1232
Grixis Control 6th JamesKisau
Dimir Reanimator 7th Munchlax446
Dimir Reanimator 8th kentaro_hokori

Lot of Dimir, along with some other various things. At the end it was Dimir Reanimator that won.

Loading Indicator

Unmarked Grave as an Entomb specifically for Archon of Cruelty is kind of wild looking. Especially by going down to three Daze because of it.

In Second Place we had Red Stompy.

Loading Indicator

What we've really come to expect out of the Red decks since the Saga rules change. It's really powerful when you get to do the thing.

Legacy Challenge 32 9/6/2025

The third Challenge event of the week was the Saturday event. This event had 41 players in it thanks to the MTGO website.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Dimir Reanimator was the most popular deck, but its win rate wasn't very good despite having a Top 8 appearance.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Red Stompy 1st Mogged
Eldrazi 2nd Thomas_Serra
Mystic Forge Combo 3rd musasabi
Red Stompy 4th RyanWu
Izzet Tempo 5th habsburger
Red Stompy 6th choutin
Dimir Reanimator 7th nekoyama2
Ninjas 8th _INF_

Kind of a neat Top 8 here. Lot of Stompy though. In fact it was Red Stompy that won.

Loading Indicator

Not really a crazy amount of frills, and there doesn't really need to be.

In Second Place we had Eldrazi.

Loading Indicator

The red Eldrazi lists are interesting because the only real red card is Eldrazi Linebreaker. Everything else is basically colorless.

Legacy Challenge 32 9/7/2025 - 1

The fourth Challenge event of the week was the first Sunday event. This event had 33 players in it thanks to the MTGO website.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here. There was no data for this event.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Dimir Reanimator 1st Munchlax446
Red Stompy 2nd wcl
Nadu Cradle Combo 3rd thatguy_champ
Dimir Tempo 4th _INF_
Lands 5th Trohck
Other Control 6th Koala40
Doomsday 7th clan
Dimir Reanimator 8th fingers1991

Somewhat varied Top 8, but it was Dimir Reanimator that won.

Loading Indicator

Very much a stock Reanimator list at this point. Not even any like, main deck hate pieces either!

In Second Place we had Red Stompy.

Loading Indicator

It is kind of sweet seeing Fiery Confluence again in decks. That card is great.

Legacy Challenge 32 9/7/2025 - 2

The final Challenge event of the week was the first Sunday event. This event had 64 players in it thanks to the MTGO website.

You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.

Dimir Reanimator was again the most played deck, but this time it's win rate was not very good. Jeskai Control and Cephalid Breakfast looked great here.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
Jeskai Control 1st SPyromancer
Izzet Tempo 2nd silviawataru
Cephalid Breakfast 3rd B-Carp
Nadu Midrange Combo 4th enlightenedmuppet
Eldrazi 5th MdvWin
Cradle Control 6th grymn
Mystic Forge Combo 7th Peppe
Dimir Tempo 8th harmonywoods

Actually kind of a neat Top 8? At the end of the event it was Jeskai Control that won.

Loading Indicator

I think the Wizards package is likely to be super good as long as Tamiyo remains a card in Legacy. Flame of Anor continues to be a very versatile card overall.

In Second Place we had Izzet Tempo.

Loading Indicator

These days I am actually somewhat surprised to not see a Cori-Steel Cutter list. It's just kind of become the defacto Izzet Tempo variant at this point.

Around the Web

  • The Eternal Glory Podcast has a new episode. Check it out here.

The Spice Corner

Now that Leagues are posted throughout the week, let's find some Spice!

Cabal Therapy in Lands is kind of sweet.

Loading Indicator

Eumidian Hatchery is a really cool card and we definitely gotta talk about this deck more soon.

Loading Indicator

Depths with Icetill Explorer is pretty sweet.

Loading Indicator

Boros Energy with a lot of Fallout cards..

Loading Indicator

Rakdos Aggro is kind of cool.
