This Week in Legacy: Interview with the NA 2025 Legacy Champion
Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of This Week in Legacy! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we're going to be talking more about Eternal Weekend, specifially with the winner of the Legacy portion of Eternal Weekend! In addition to that we've got an update on H2H Data and some more Challenge data to look at.
Without further ado, let's dive right in!
The 2025 NA Legacy Champion - Tom Basketball
This past weekend I got the chance to sit down with the 2025 NA Legacy Champion, Tom Basketball, and talk about winning the event on Mystic Forge Combo as well as his thoughts on Legacy at the moment! Check out the video embed below to listen to this interview!
H2H Data Update
I've got yet another update on the H2H Data we've been collecting for the Legacy Data Collection Project! I'm still determining how best to import this data elsewhere, but for now, check out some graphs.
Legacy Challenge 32 10/15/2025
The first Challenge event of the week was the Wednesday event. This event had 38 players in it thanks to the MTGO website.
You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
Mystic Forge was the most popular deck of the event and it had a pretty strong win rate overall. Dimir Reanimator also did well, as did Mardu Energy.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Grixis Tempo | 1st | mei0024 |
Mystic Forge Combo | 2nd | musasabi |
Mystic Forge Combo | 3rd | HoldTheElle |
Mystic Forge Combo | 4th | XanaZero |
Dimir Reanimator | 5th | Munchlax446 |
Dimir Reanimator | 6th | lia2022 |
Nadu Midrange Combo | 7th | fishduggery |
Mardu Energy | 8th | Mav40121 |
Quite a bit of Mystic Forge indeed. At the end of the event it was Grixis Tempo that won.
Good old Delver of Secrets doing the work here. I love the main deck Dismember here. Seems super sweet.
In Second Place we had Mystic Forge.
This deck certainly continues to look like a real boogeyman after its win at Eternal Weekend. The popularity factor of being a winner of a big event like that is that a lot of people flock to that deck. It will be interesting to see how the format settles going into the next EW event.
Legacy Challenge 32 10/17/2025
The second Challenge event of the week was the Friday event. This event had 47 players in it thanks to the MTGO website.
You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
Izzet Tempo was heavily played here, but it didn't do so hot in terms of win rate. Dimir Reanimator looked super good, as did Loam Pox and Oops. Mystic Forge cratered in this event.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Nadu Midrange Combo | 1st | ecobaronen |
Omni-Tell | 2nd | RyanWu |
Oops! All Spells | 3rd | choutin |
Dimir Reanimator | 4th | Bonfigs |
Dimir Reanimator | 5th | felix619 |
Dimir Reanimator | 6th | Ozymandias17 |
Loam Pox | 7th | doctor-x |
Saga Storm | 8th | kokoko098 |
Lot of Reanimator here, but the event ended up being won by Nadu Midrange Combo.
Solid looking list here. I like Scythecat Cub in the typical Bristly Bill slot because its basically the same card but not Legendary so it can't be caught by Karakas, and the doubling of counters is sometimes relevant to closing games out.
In Second Place we had Omni-Tell.
This is a pretty near list. Borne Upon a Wind is a sick card to pair with Omniscience when you can just cast everything at instant speed.
Legacy Challenge 32 10/18/2025
The third Challenge event of the week was the Saturday event. This event had 58 players in it thanks to the MTGO website.
You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
Dimir Reanimator was super played here, but its win rate wasn't insane. Izzet Tempo did very good, as did Oops and Cephalid Breakfast.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Izzet Tempo | 1st | _INF_ |
Oops! All Spells | 2nd | choutin |
Riddler Control | 3rd | TeaW1thRum |
Dimir Reanimator | 4th | OSCA66 |
Red Stompy | 5th | kanican |
Esper Control | 6th | shenmeng |
Mystic Forge | 7th | mRichi |
Death and Taxes - BW (Yorion) | 8th | yoshiwata |
This is a pretty neat Top 8. Lot of different decks. At the end of the event it was Izzet Tempo that won.
Solid list. Some Delver action and some Cori-Steel Cutter. Seems like a really good place to be.
In Second Place we had Oops.
Progenitus in the sideboard is super cute.
Legacy Challenge 32 10/19/2025 - 1
The fourth Challenge event of the week was the first Sunday event. This event had 45 players in it thanks to the MTGO website.
You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
Dimir Reanimator was the most played deck of the event, but its win rate stayed right around the 50% mark. Izzet Tempo and Cephalid Breakfast looked pretty good, as did Lands. Oops did very poorly here.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Cephalid Breakfast | 1st | zhinonono |
Dimir Reanimator | 2nd | Munchlax446 |
Red Stompy | 3rd | YoungElf |
Mono Black Reanimator | 4th | EmperorOppai |
Humans | 5th | DominiqueTutor |
Dimir Reanimator | 6th | lia2022 |
Naya Stompy | 7th | kozz27 |
Esper Control | 8th | harmonywoods |
This Top 8 has some neat stuff to it. At the end of the event it was Cephalid Breakfast that won.
Solid looking list here. Four Tamiyo is pretty great, because the card is just absolutely super good in current Legacy. It makes sense for this Tempo/Control/Combo deck to want to play the card.
In Second Place we had Dimir Reanimator.
Very stock looking list here. Not much to really speak of that seems out of place or spicy.
Legacy Challenge 32 10/19/2025 - 2
The final Challenge event of the week was the second Sunday event. This event had 73 players in it thanks to the MTGO website.
You can find the Top 32 decklists for this event here and the data sheet here.
Dimir Reanimator was the most played deck, and despite puting two copies in Top 8 its overall win rate wasn't great. Loam Pox had a solid win rate here, as did Saga Storm and Omni-Tell. Cephalid Breakfast tanked hard here.
Let's take a look at the Top 8.
Deck Name | Placing | MTGO Username |
---|---|---|
Dimir Tempo | 1st | ecobaronen |
Dimir Reanimator | 2nd | DethFrmAbove |
Doomsday | 3rd | Enrichetta |
Omni-Tell | 4th | MoMo321 |
Lands | 5th | Sprouts |
Saga Storm | 6th | TonyScapone |
Dimir Reanimator | 7th | Sven745 |
Mystic Forge Combo | 8th | Peppembr |
Pretty interesting Top 8. At the end of the event it was Dimir Tempo that won.
This is fairly interesting variant, as it cuts back heavily down to two copies of Daze which is interesting. Also three copies of Ponder. The main spots you see this being important is primarily multiple copies of Nihil Spellbomb for main deck graveyard hate and Mishra's Bauble (likely to fuel Nethergoyf).
In Second Place we had Dimir Reanimator.
Okay okay okay I see what is happening here. No Bowmasters in the main, transformational Doomsday sideboard? Dark Ritual main? Highly amusing.
