This Week in Legacy: Good Grief!

Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of This Week in Legacy! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we're going to be talking about the Banned and Restricted Announcement from this past week, and the lack of a banning in Legacy at all. There is currently an ongoing issue with the MTGO Decklists page so we don't have any data from this past week on Challenges, so we are only really focusing on the BnR, and this will be a rather short article overall.

Without further ado, let's dive right in!

Banned and Restricted Announcement 6/24

There was a Banned and Restricted Announcement this past week, and well... this thing didn't happen.

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Yeah. Grief did not get banned in Legacy, even though a lot of community sentiment around this card is that it should be gone from the format. You can read the full announcement here, but I'm putting the Legacy portion here.

The major reasoning behind no changes to Legacy at the moment largely has to do with the release of Modern Horizons 3 and how that format is already impacting the format. MH3 has indeed brought several changes to Legacy, with the introduction of cards like Necrodominance and Nadu among other things, but I do personally believe that this should have been the time to ban something like Grief. I am usually all for exploring a new format with new cards, and I absolutely love that about MH3 at the moment, but I too have seen just how powerful Rescaminator decks have become over this time in the past few weeks. This is a deck that has consistently proven that not only can it absorb new cards (see Psychic Frog), but that it also doesn't care so much about new cards either. The Grief + Reanimate scam play is simply just so strong that it works well against people trying to do new things.

I kind of hope that August lets us see what will happen with this card and this deck. I don't expect anything to come out of the Assassin's Creed set or even Bloomburrow that could stop Rescaminator and how powerful it truly is, but who knows? I do think action will need to be taken, so hopefully August will be that action.

This BnR has continued to prove also that I think Legacy does need a format panel akin to the Pauper Format Panel. It would be great to see something like that become a thing, for sure. I do think it would work, as we've had often lots of great discussions on this format via our Round Tables, but it needs a hand like a Gavin Verhey to guide it.

Single Scoop: You Don't Need to Build Around Ugin At All

Ugin might read like in a way to where you'd load your deck up with a bunch of random colorless spells but Ugin might just be good on his own! This Golgari Ramp shell will test that.
