Single Scoop: Grixis Waste Not (Historic, Magic Arena)

With the arrival of Historic Anthology 2, I saw Waste Not and was pretty excited as this naturally slots into a deck with Nicol Bolas, the Ravager and Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger so I got to putting something together!

Gameplan

With how the Grixis Midrange play style goes with all of the hand disruption and one for one trades, I wanted to throw Waste Not into the deck to turn our discarding plays into even more value..

$ 0.00 $ 0.00

Having Waste not curve right into something like a Davriel, Rogue Shadowmage or Disinformation Campaign could lead to some pretty sweet lines. The worst mode on Waste Not is the early double black mana as we can't really take advantage of that all too well, but in the midgame around turns five or six, this could be a huge way for us to chain off multiple big spells that could empty our hand and opponent's hand with it! Naturally, the zombies and card draw are really good so not much needs to be said there. The one thing to remember while playing this deck is we're still a very slow so decks like Red Deck or Haste Tribal aka Gruul, really punish us for attacking the hand and not the board too much. The issue with this deck is once we've emptied our opponent's hand, they're going to never give us value off Waste Not so what is our plan B?

$ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00

Our backup gameplan is to win on the back of Kroxa and Nicol Bolas. I can't believe how much I'd miss Nicol Bolas, the Ravager but it plays so well with Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger! I love these two cards so much I even play it in Pioneer and it does wonders there. Obviously, in Historic we don't have cards like Thoughtseize but with all the ways we have to attack our opponent's hand, we should be able to smoothly keep our bombs around to take over the game. We also have cards like Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God and Angrath, the Flame Chained to top off our curve and help us get to the finish line.

Conclusion

** SPOILER ALERT **

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

The deck went 7-1 and we got really lucky on some of our draws. We live and die by the top of our deck as top decking a discard spell isn't the greatest. Because of this, I might want to add cards like Pack Rat to give us something to do with our dead draws. If this were Best of three, I think I would definitely sideboard Pack Rat but since its Bo1, we may need to lean towards playing a few more cheap interaction spells like Lava Coil and Tyrant's Scorn. I also feel like we need one more card at the three-drop slot so we can curve into something with Waste Not.  It can be either a Davriel, Rogue Shadowmage or another Disinformation Campaign

Here's what a rough update would look like and I'll probably tweak this a bit more to find out how to squeeze Pack Rat in but best of one does make spots in our deck a bit limited. Either way, Historic is shaping up to be a lot of fun whether its best of one or best of three! Let me know if you see any lists or have a build you've liked for Historic Bo1 or Bo3! As always, thanks for watching.
