Single Scoop: Gideon Tribal (Historic, Magic Arena)


This week's episode, we remember Gideon Jura by playing a deck loaded with Gideons. The list originally came from Kirvo85. I slightly modified the deck and here's what I came up with.

Gameplan

The gameplan is really quite simple, control the board with all of our sweet removal spells and then win with our fallen favorite, Gideon!

The deck functions like a black white control deck that wants to just get there on the back of Gideon and tokens from Castle Ardenvale. The Gideons we have access to in historic aren't nearly as powerful without Gideon Jura or Gideon, Ally of Zendikar but it sure is fun to try to make it work. Gideon Blackblade and Gideon of the Trials are easy includes when it comes to a Gideon deck but Gideon, the Oathsworn was something I wanted to throw in there as its the only Gideon we have that has somewhat higher loyalty. This means an emblem from Gideon of the Trials will actually be a bit brutal for our opponents. Seriously though, Gideon Jura should be put on Arena!

We also pack some hate for decks like Goblins and Neoform combos as we are a tap-out control deck. Grafdigger's Cage does wonders as it shuts off Muxus, Goblin Grandee and prevents Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath from coming back. Gideon's Intervention is a bit more narrow but some decks just have a single card that you can't beat so we're hoping to pick that off early. Of course, Cling to Dust is included in almost any deck with black on Arena as the card is cheap, versatile, and has recursion.

Conclusion

The deck is slow and is dependent on keeping Gideon around. The Gideons aren't the best at defending themselves so maybe more copies of Oath of Kaya could help us keep our health high. I think a card we should add into the deck in some numbers might be Shatter the Sky as our Gideons won't die from the sweeper and will draw us a card. If we ever get Chained to the Rocks or anything like that in Historic, I would love to see a Boros Superfriends deck like in Pioneer. If not that, some more Orzhov token support like Intangible Virtue and Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. Either way, the list was fun and really made me want MTG Arena to add the older gideons or put more support for the token archetype into the meta. Hopefully we see that in the next Historic Anthology!
