Much Abrew: Perennation Lock (Standard)
Hello everyone, and welcome to another edition of Much Abrew About Nothing! This week, we're heading to Tarkir: Dragonstorm Standard to build around one of my favorite cards from the set: Perennation! While the new mythic reanimation spell is a bit expensive at six mana, it also has a huge upside: it gives the permanent it reanimates hexproof and indestructible! So, what are we trying to reanimate? Herald of Eternal Dawn! Herald of Eternal Dawn might have the most powerful text box in Magic: "You can't lose the game, and your opponents can't win the game." The problem is that Herald of Eternal Dawn dies a lot. But our Angel will be hexproof and indestructible if we can reanimate it with Perennation, making it impossible for a lot of decks to kill, which means we can just kick back and wait for our opponent to either give up or run out of cards! How good is Perennation with Herald of Eternal Dawn? Let's get to the video and find out!
Much Abrew: Perennation Lock
Wrap-Up
So, how did our plan of winning by never losing actually work? Overall, pretty well. We went 8-7 with the deck, although this happened during early-access day, so how much this record actually matters is up for debate. Overall, the deck is hilarious and absolutely wrecks some people who simply can't beat a hexproof, indestructible Herald of Eternal Dawn, although we also have some really bad matchups thanks to cards like Nowhere to Run, random edicts, or Sunfall, which can get around our protection.
The good news is that Herald of Eternal Dawn is actually a pretty fast clock, hitting for six in the air each turn, which means that in our bad matchups, we don't really need to keep Herald around forever, just long enough to get our opponent's life total down to zero with our big flier. All in all, I'd be surprised if the combo were a tier option in a world where Nowhere to Run and Sunfall are so popular, but it is hilarious when it works. The utter helplessness of opponents in the face of an unkillable, untargetable Platinum Angel makes any losses along the way more than worth it!
