Much Abrew: Green Sun's Zenith for Siege Rhino (Modern)
Hello everyone, and welcome to another edition of Much Abrew About Nothing. Last week, Wizards unbanned Green Sun's Zenith, which has led to the rise of Maverick—Abzan Midrange decks with lots of one-of silver bullets for Green Sun's Zenith to tutor up—in Modern. But so far, everyone is building the deck wrong. Sure, the decks seem functional, consistent, and maybe even powerful, but they mostly miss the single most important card in the deck: Siege Rhino! In general, my philosophy for Modern is that if Siege Rhino is good, then Modern is good. Does Green Sun's Zenith mean Siege Rhino is good again? Let's try to tutor it up and find out!
Much Abrew: GSZ for Siege Rhino
Wrap-Up
So, was Siege Rhino good? Record-wise, we finished our league 3-2, which is pretty solid. In general, the Maverick archetype felt oddly strong. The deck looks super fair, but as it turns out, the consistency that Green Sun's Zenith adds by allowing the deck to find super powerful one-ofs consistently is really powerful. We also got to see Siege Rhino itself either be absurd (see: our match against Burn where Siege Rhino more or less won us the game by itself) or pretty underpowered (see: the Energy matchup where we played three Siege Rhinos and still got crushed by Guide of Souls). Still, the fact that we were competitive with a super-fair deck playing four Siege Rhinos is super encouraging about the current state of Modern. Sure, maybe Siege Rhino is no longer the best creature in the format, but it's still solid and, as we saw, can pick up a surprising number of wins a full decade after it was first released way back in Khans of Tarkir! If you've been missing Siege Rhino, give the deck a shot! It's fun to play and good enough to win a lot of matches!
