Modern Mayhem: Weird Phoenix (Modern, Magic Online)
Let's get weird!
Gameplan
The typical phoenix matchup is us firing off a ton of cheap spells like Lightning Bolt and other burn spells into a silly amount of Arclight Phoenix. But the real backbone of the deck I feel lies within the deck's one-drops.
Because of this, what if we play add a playset of Blistercoil Weird?
It's not a groundbreaking inclusion to the deck but I feel like this will increase the consistency in our turn one plays. The card has pseudo prowess and in a weird world where we need to block after attacks, this can do that!
Conclusion
The deck is very powerful but seriously needs help in the Hogaak department. We went 4-1 only dropping a game to a Dredge-Gaak (piloted by xfileMTG. He's great!). Maybe with how prominent Hogaak decks are, we should be playing even more graveyard hate because we're just a bunch of small one-drops backed up by burn spells and that might not be fast enough to stop an 8/8 Trampler on turn two. Especially if there are Vengevines following. That's a lot of power and veggies, to be honest. Other than that, I really liked Blistercoil Weird but my current dilemma is deciding on having more spells or more one-drop threats. What do you think? Either way, playing all this modern will be great as I get ready for #MTGVegas!
Thanks for watching another episode of Modern Mayhem! See ya soon!
