Meme or Dream? Planeswalker Deck Ashiok (Standard)
A few months ago, Wizards started publishing decklists from Magic Arena. To qualify for publication, a deck needs to win at least six matches in a row at platinum rank or better. This sounds simple on its face, but some incredibly janky lists end up being posted every time lists are published. This has led to speculation that a bug in the system allows decks that didn't actually win six matches in a row to be published or, for the most tin-foil-hatted crowd, the idea that Wizards just publishes whatever it wants, to make the metagame look more diverse than it really is.
This week, as I was browsing through the lists published from Arena, I came across a really weird-looking deck built around Ashiok, Sculptor of Fears, probably better known as Planeswalker Deck Ashiok. The deck wanted Ashiok so badly that it was even playing Ashiok's Forerunner to tutor it up. After a bit more research, I realized that this wasn't a deck built around Ashiok, Sculptor of Fears—it was literally the Ashiok Planeswalker Deck straight out of the box! Apparently, someone bought the Ashiok Planeswalker Deck in paper, which comes with a code to get the deck on Magic Arena, and not only decided to play the deck straight out of the box but also, somehow, in some way, managed to string together six wins in a row in best-of-three with the deck, which is either shocking or impressive—I'm not 100% sure. As such, today, we're playing Planeswalker Deck Ashiok. Is it straight-from-the-box secret Standard tech that everyone has missed, or is the plan as janky as it looks on paper? Is the Ashiok Planeswalker Deck a meme or dream? Let's play some matches and find out!
