Magic Arena: Historic Artisan Guide and Decklists
For the next 10 days, in celebration of the holiday season, Magic Arena is running a special Historic Artisan event. If you're looking for something other than Standard and Historic to play on Arena, this event is your chance. If you're not familiar with the Artisan format, it only allows commons and uncommons (similar to a Peasant format in tabletop Magic). The twist this time is that rather than being Standard Artisan (which has been a special event in the past), the event is focused on the Historic format, so (almost) any commons and uncommons in your collection are legal for the event. Persistent Petitioners, Cauldron Familiar, Cavalcade of Calamity and Gates Ablaze are banned for the event. Thanks to the Historic focus, you also get some sweet Historic-focused card styles as rewards.
The event costs 200 gems or 2,500 gold to enter, and while you can play as many games as you want from December 20th to December 30th, your first five wins offer the following rewards:
- Win 1: Militia Bugler card style
- Win 2: Curious Obsession card style
- Win 3: Cast Down card style
- Win 4: Guttersnipe card style
- Win 5: Wildgrowth Walker card style
Considering the uncommon and common only nature of the format, some of the most interesting and potentially powerful decks in the format will likely take advantage of tribal synergies and uncommon lords. Ixalan tribes in specific have access to not just an uncommon lord but an uncommon creature-based tribal tutor. For example, Vampires have Legion Lieutenant and Forerunner of the Legion, Merfolk get Merfolk Mistbinder and Forerunner of the Heralds and so on. There are also some powerful pseudo-lords in Empyrean Eagle and Grumgully, the Generous that offer more flexibility in regards to creature type. If you're looking for some decks to try in the event, you'll find some options below and even more on our Artisan Historic User-Submitted Decks page.
