Historic 101: Holiday Office Party


We've got another fun viewer submitted list this week with AwesomeWaseem's Holiday Office Party deck!

Gameplan

The deck is all about tempo and tackling opponents with confusion as they try to figure out what we're doing with the party mechanic!

With the party mechanic, our payoffs would be Archpriest of Iona and Nimble Trapfinder. The Archpriest is quite the powerful one drop. Once party mode is online, it gives our threats evasion which is great for going into the late game when the ground gets gummed up. Another sweet party payoff is the Trapfinder as it's able to refill our hand. It being unblockable is another welcomed ability! Lastly, we have Concerted Defense which will be a super Spell Pierce when our party is online. This can be used in multiple ways as it can blank Wrath of God and other noncreature threats.

We have other ways to disrupt our opponents in Meddling Mage and Deputy of Detention. Meddling Mage can be brutal on opponents on key turns or against decks that are relying on a few specific threats or answers. An example would be to try to get a Mage down the turn before a sweeper as they'll have to take a turn off to answer the mage before sweeping which could buy us the time we need. Deputy of Detention may not exile a permanent like Skyclave Apparition but being able to pick up multiples of permanents with the same name is huge. It's also nice that it has the three toughness which will matter more often than you'd think!

The powerhouse of the deck is Collected Company! Surprise, CoCo is a good card! Being able to drop two creatures to boost your party mechanic can win games. Being able to instant speed cards like Skyclave Apparition and Linvala, Shield of Sea Gate can be back breaking. It feels amazing having Nimble Trapfinder and then at the end of the opponent's turn, form a full party and draw roughly a billion cards!

Conclusion

We got more wins than losses and we did it with a party deck! I actually had a blast with this deck and hope that someday we get Reflector Mage and Spell Queller in the format. The deck is that sweet tempo play style that always makes me smile. The only changes I'd make would be a few Disdainful Strokes and maybe a few more ways to beat the Azorius Auras deck. Other than that, I wouldn't do much to it so awesome job AwesomeWaseem! The deck definitely felt like I was in good company *ba dum tssssss*
