Historic 101: Hateboar 2: Electric UwUgaloo

Death and taxes is an archetype that has existed in formats like Modern and Legacy but not quite in Historic. When we last piloted the deck, it did quite well in Historic, and thanks to Kaldheim, we got a few new ways to hate on our opponents in Reidane, God of the Worthy and Glorious Protector! Here's what an updated list would look like

Gameplan

The deck tries to assemble a soft lock on our opponents why playing a bunch of tax pieces like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben

With enough of these effects, we'll delay our opponents from executing their gameplan and win ourselves the game. What's great for the archetype is the addition of snow mana, Reidane, God of the Worthy, and Glorious Protector.

At the point of filming, it just seems correct to add snow mana into our mana base as there seems to be nothing to really punish us. The deck was lacking a threat like Mutavault and I have to say that Faceless Haven is a huge help for our deck as the card gives us a payoff for running snow mana. It's quite nice in helping us get around sorcery speed removal. We aren't really going to activate these until our opponents have used their resources on all of our other threats. Speaking of snow lands, if everyone else is going to start including snow mana, Reidane, God of the Worthy will be a huge benefit as we'll tap all their lands while also beating them down with a 2/3 vigilant body. The tax effect of an additional 2 mana on noncreature spells CMC 4 or greater could be nice to slow down Wrath of God, Nissa, Who Shakes the World, and whatever else Historic can muster up. Lastly, we have Glorious Protector. Outside of a few threats, most of our creatures die pretty easily and the Protector gives us another way to get tricky with opponents. The card will potentially save us from sweepers like Extinction Event and Wrath of God, This will give us a little more resilience to removal heavy decks.

Conclusion

The deck went 4-1 against the ladder and kept a decent amount of opponents playing fair magic. Maybe I've always been a death & taxes player? The deck doesn't do anything flashy and you'll have to calculate each play as we don't have any ways to accrue card advantage. Be careful not to overcommit and be ready to play key tax effects on turns you feel the opponent might make a big play. Outside of that, the deck isn't quite the power level of D&T in Modern but maybe we'll get Thought-Knot Seer and Eldrazi Temple in the next Historic Anthology? Either way, try the deck for yourselves and let me know what you'd change.

Thanks for watching and I'll see you at the next one!
