Historic 101: Grixstoric

Gameplan

With Uro gone, I felt that the format can open itself up to other midrange and control decks. I had to dust off my good ol' Nicol Bolas, the Ravager and Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God.

The best elder dragon in the game has a ton of new tools that I think make the deck more powerful in historic. Specifically, Saw It Coming and Behold the Multiverse. In a format where everyone and their pet snail plays Thoughtseize, it's nice to know we can stow away our answers and draw spells in the Foretell zone. Ontop of that, Bolas having a back up friend in Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor isn't the worst either. I think there's actually enough powerful Grixis cards to where you can put up a fight. Goblins still are a problem but that's life in Historic.

With the amount of Orzhov Auras and Jund Sacrifice variants running around, Shadows' Verdict has to be the absolute best card right now. It permanently answers those decks so outside of some pretty unfortunate draws, we should be able to beat those decks.

Conclusion

The meta in Historic is still a bit fresh with the void that Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath left, and I'm excited to see what midrange deck fills that void. I do think our list isn't perfect as it came to my realization that we don't have any life gain. We actually have a ton of life loss and not much to offset it. I'll probably have to tweak the list to have more lifegain while also being able to apply more pressure against all the Azorius Control decks that are in the meta. I can't help but feel we're almost at a respectable power level in Historic. Lets hope that Historic Anthology 4 and Strixhaven give us a few more pieces. I think we're missing cards like Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet and Kolaghan's Command before we can officially push ourselves into tier 1, but we're still strong enough to climb through Diamond!

Thanks for watching and I'll see you at the next one
