Fish Five-0: Ral Combo (Standard, Magic Arena)

When #MTGWAR came out people talked about Ral, Storm Conduit and the infinite combo with Expansion // Explosion. With #MTGM20 here, I figured it would be fun to play a list that has updated the deck a little bit.

Gameplan

We're for the most part going to control the board for as long as we can until we get to a point where we can combo off!

$ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00 $ 0.00

This combo was hyped at the release of #MTGWAR but fell out of flavor as Teferi, Time Raveler kind of stops the combo and numerous other factors but with #MTGM20 here, we do have some sweet new cards to play with that make it so we're able to play our counter-burn playstyle. Before we jump into that, if you're unaware of the combo, we need a Ral, Storm Conduit which will ping our opponents for 1 whenever we cast an instant or sorcery. We cast a card like Shock or whatever with Ral on board and then hold priority so you must be in Full Control mode. With the spell on the stack, cast an Expansion and then cast another Expansion to copy the first expansion which then generates a new copy which will allow us to infinitely copy the original Expansion.

Reminder: Teferi, Time Raveler's passive means we can't cast our copies as the stack needs to be clear for us to cast sorceries.

Outside of the infinite combo, we have a burn game plan with our Lightning Strike and Expansion // Explosion. The nice thing about the deck is that even though we may not have the combo, we often can just get there from casting spells and just playing patiently with a Ral, Storm Conduit on board as we'll just naturally just ping our opponents over time. What helps with this is a new card in Chandra. Awakened Inferno. If Chandra comes down and adds a few emblems on top of our burn spells, we usually win without the combo!

Conclusion

After playing with the deck, I felt like the deck is still a blast to play being able to counter our opponent's spells and hit them with things like Ionize. I would probably run a few Blood Sun just to help fight Field of the Dead. Though the deck was fun, it still feels like it's still missing something. One thing to note though, the combo is still intact after rotation and may be able to get the jump on the new meta for a week or two with its core build. Who knows though? Maybe Eldraine brings more for the deck! Can't wait for spoiler season for Eldraine to see what new cards to add!

See you at the next one!
