Fish Five-0: Grixis Adventures (Standard, Magic Arena)


Yes, there is a Golgari Adventures deck out there, but there are more adventures to be had and in other colors!

 

Gameplan

So many decks in this meta are really good at grinding in this midrange format but we've got a Lucky Clover

Well, we've already seen this card run wild with advantage making two tokens off of cards like Lovestruck Beast but in this deck we get a ton of removal with this. Not only do the copies from Lucky Clover duplicate but it helps us get around the "casting two spells a turn" clause that is tied to Fires of Invention. I think this synergy is brilliant as the copies just give us new targets and allow for our turns to be so much more back breaking. Here are the spells we're looking to cast..

It doesn't seem like much but being able to get multiple copies of Brazen Borrower's Petty Theft can really reset the tempo for a ton of opponents. Especially when we currently struggle with dealing with a Wicked Wolf. The next spell that is amazing is Bonecrusher Giant. Getting to get multiple copies of Stomp will light up aggressive boards and burn down planeswalkers with dwindling loyalty. Speaking of removal, the same can be said about Murderous Rider as that can pick off a planeswalker and maybe a Questing Beast or a pesky Nissa, Who Shakes the World elemental but please be careful as this will cost you four health upon the resolution of each copy. Another thing to be mindful of is that the original copy needs to resolve for you to get the creature side. The last adventure we're going to go on is with Fae of Wishes. This card's versatility has already been proven to be strong as it can be a wall against aggro decks but also a tool to grab whatever answer is required at the time or a way to get a win with either Liliana, Dreadhorde general, Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God and Planewide Celebration/The Elderspell

 

Matchups

This definitely wants to grind our opponents out of cards and put both players in top deck mode as your bombs are usually better than most decks but because of how clunky and slow our deck is, an insanely aggressive start from a Knights or Red deck can light up our plans for victory. The best hands you can have against this deck is some amount of early interaction in Bonecrusher Giant or Brazen Borrower + Lucky Clover as we're just trying to stabilize until we hit the point where we can play Fires of Invention + Ritual of Soot. After this, you cruise to victory on the back of your Fae of Wishes or Nicky B (Nicol Bolas)

Our worst match up has to be anything with a silly amount of counter spells as we do play a bunch of clunky spells. There's not much you can do about these decks other than try to line up your turns to play two spells in one turn. Save cards like Thought Erasure for a turn where we're trying to resolve something as opposed to just firing it off randomly. Counterspells like Quench and Mystical Dispute don't hurt as much as we just need to be patient and sneak around them as a resolved Fires of Invention makes those counterspells useless.

 

The deck was an absolute machine and I loved the way it played. Our only loss was a really fun match between another Simic Midrange matchup where it was top deck after toptop deck and the game was back and forth. I feel like decks with black are so good right now because the hard removal is so important as being able to quickly clean a Nissa or Oko off the board leads to less blow outs from cards like Veil of Summer. I still feel unsure about including cards like Chandra, Acolyte of Flame as it doesn't do much against a field of Nissa's elementals and Liliana, Dreadhorde General is just better as she can deal with a Wicked Wolf. Speaking of that wolf, we should probably run an Epic Downfall or something to deal with that card. I really love the Lucky Clover but I feel like four copies might be excessive so an updated list isn't going to be crazy different. It'll just have a few tweaks and look like this...
