Fish Five-0: Chevillry is Alive!


When Chevill, Bane of Monsters was revealed, I thought the card was pretty sweet due to the fact that it rewards you for killing your opponent's stuff and I do enjoy doing that quite a bit. I tried Chevill out in Pioneer but now I'd like to see if he's viable in standard in a Golgari midrange shell that isn't Adventures. This is what I came up with ...

The deck is anchored by value creatures that can accrue a ton of value over time if left alone. Chevill can potentially keep us going as we trade one for ones with our opponents. Chevill is a 1/3 which is relevant in a format with Stomp existing. The card is absolutely too fair for today's standard but I just really like the card so we're jamming Chevill! Another card I've liked is Garruk's Harbinger. This card feels relevant right now with all of the dimir control running around and the Hexproof makes it a big deal as it will snowball out of control if it connects a ton!

Our alternative win conditions are our planeswalkers! Right now, we don't see a ton of planeswalkers so I figured we'd force a majority of walkers available to us in the Golgari colors. Liliana, Waker of the Dead is a good way to keep grinding our opponent's handsize down while being a possible removal spell for us. Our two Garruks can be fetched off of Garruk's Harbinger so I had to include them. Garruk, Cursed Huntsman is a card that hasn't seen any play and maybe that's because it feels a bit overcosted. However, the card is a Garruk so we had to auto include.

Conclusion

The deck is a pile of value cards stitched together and it may not be a tier one deck but it is very a "rock" deck. I don't think the playstyle can keep up with today's Magic but it's always nice to try. We function on a sort of clunky curve and I'm sure I could shave a few tapped lands as we have a ton between our dual lands and MDFCs. Anywho, I'm headed back to the drawing board! Kaldheim is around the corner and I can't wait to see what new cards will be popping up in the set.
