Commander Clash S6 E4: Anything Goes! (Arcum vs. Lazav vs. Maga vs. Toshiro)

Welcome back to Commander Clash! This week we're keeping things simple with Anything Goes, where we bring any deck we feel like playing without any episode restrictions (other than our soft bans). Let's see what we've got:

  • Crim brings out one of his personal deck lists, a sneaky, toolboxy Voltron list led by Lazav, the Multifarious
  • Richard embraces the role of archenemy by picking one of the oldest hated commanders, Arcum Dagsson
  • Seth tries out Mono Black Ramp, policing the board so he can draw cards in peace and maybe win eventually with Maga, Traitor to Mortals
  • Tomer ignores the usual Blue/Red Spellslinger options and goes for something wildly different: Black Spellslinger with Toshiro Umezawa

All of us are Black and Blue and the battle hasn't even started! Who will emerge victorious? Let's find out! But first, a quick reminder: if you like Commander Clash. and other video content here on MTGGoldfish, make sure to subscribe to the MTGGoldfish Youtube Channel to keep up with the latest and greatest.

Our Soft Ban List

Here on Commander Clash we follow the official ban list of the format, plus a few extra "soft bans" for our own group. We do this to lessen the probability of "unenjoyable" games being recorded; "unenjoyable" being defined as what the majority of you, the viewers, don't like seeing. Keep in mind that we record Commander Clash once a week and only have about ~4 hours to record, so we want to ensure that the games we play during our limited time end up being entertaining ones. With that in mind, this is our current soft ban list:

The three best mana ramp options are banned because they sometimes lead to games where a player has such an explosive start and shoots so far ahead that, despite everyone else's best efforts, that player just wins the game. Season 3 Episode 16 is an example of when that happens, but it's also not uncommon to dump your hand full of these mana rocks and then just Wheel (Windfall). These three mana rocks have always been the main factor between just a fast start and a completely degenerate one.

Cyclonic Rift was banned due to persistent negative feedback in the comments section whenever it was cast. Since it's one of the best board wipes in the entire format, and unquestionably the best in all but the fastest/competitive playgroups, we were basically auto-including it into all our Blue decks so you'd see it quite often in recordings. Since lots of you didn't like seeing it, and it would get cast in a ton of episodes, we just agreed to ban it.

"No individual card costs over $100 USD" is our current budget restriction this season. We've almost always had some sort of budget restriction on this show. This serves two purposes: first, it helps keep the power variance between our decks closer, since the most popular cards over $100 also happen to be very powerful (hello, Gaea's Cradle). Second, it keeps the price of our decks down, which gives viewers of a look at decks and cards in action that they might want to pick up and would afford to do so. We tried lifting the budget restriction last season and there was a lot of negative feedback about it so we brought it back. However, we are most okay with breaking this restriction if it's done for thematic reasons and not just for power reasons.

I hope this explanation was satisfactory to people asking about the ban list. Remember that the purpose of this soft ban list is only to decrease the probability of recording unenjoyable games for you to watch. It's specifically tailor made for Commander Clash, not any other playgroup.

Next Week: More C18!
