Can I Win the Game Without Casting A Single Spell? | Brewer's Kitchen


Well, hello there! Brewer’s Kitchen here and today were gonna try to win the game without casting a single spell.

The Gameplan

Ok let’s be real here, I’m not going to spoil the video but this deck is more of a proof of concept. Since we can’t cast any spells, we have to rely on channeling, cycling, and discarding our cards for effects to grind out value. Luckily the historic card pool allows for a relatively solid late game if our interaction deals with what our opponent is doing.

Shigeki, Jukai Visionary and Colossal Skyturtle can both be channeled to return each other and other cards from our graveyard to our hand. We used this combo in another video repeatedly triple Casualties of War our opponents. Too bad this time we can’t play Fires of Invention which makes this whole loop very slow and mana intensive. Nevertheless, combined with interaction and a win condition, we should technically have a functional gameplan with this.

Due to the “no spell casting” restriction, we can’t be too picky about our win conditions. Shark Typhoon creates flying sharks and draws a card. And while this is pretty decent, that’s about what we got. We do play a playset of Yidaro, Wandering Monster but in all the games I played I only put it onto the battlefield once.

Now that we have a way to win the game, we just need to stop our opponent from doing it first.
Trumpeting Carnosaur and Twinshot Sniper act as removal, Choking Tethers taps down attackers and blockers, Colossal Skyturtle and Otawara, Soaring City act as bounce spells and we even got a counter with Mirrorshell Crab. That being said, none of these are efficient removal options.

The same can be said about our “ramp”. Careful Cultivation creates a Llanowar Elves token for two mana and Herd Migration searches for a basic land but doesn’t even put it on the battlefield. Without hitting our land drops, we’re never gonna win a game… To be fair, it’s not that realistic to legitimately win a game even if everything goes right. Our game plan is so slow that even the smallest unanswered threat will just kill us by themselves if it doesn’t get dealt with by our mediocre removal.


Wrap up

As expected, sticking to the “no spell casting allowed” restriction limits the power of the deck. In the end, we got a legitimate win, but it took everything lining up perfectly against a very low power deck to pull it off.
