Against the Odds: Is The Grim Captain Standard's Salvation?

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Against the Odds! Normally on Against the Odds we play my brews, but this week I couldn't resist playing this wild Throne of the Grim Captain deck that showed up on Regional Championship coverage this weekend. Somehow in round 4 the deck managed to beat the monster of the format in Izzet Prowess, although it then proceeded to lose pretty much all the rest of its matches to miss day two completely, so I have no clue if the deck is actually good. What I do know is that it's super spicy and seems hilariously fun to play! Can The Grim Captain save Standard? Let's get to the video and find out!

Wrap Up

No big write up today since this episode came together at the last minute and I'm working on Final Fantasy spoiler stuff, but somehow the deck actually did work! We went 4-2 with the deck, beating Izzet Prowess (and a couple other tier Standard deck) along the way. We played The Grim Captain once before, nearly two years ago now, but it's gotten some massive upgrades since then in the form of some changelings, which make it way easier to get The Grim Captain on the battlefield and it turns out that they 7/7 hexproof, lifelinker is actually incredibly powerful. I'm pretty sure we managed to win every game where we summoned The Grim Captain and, more surprisingly, managed to get some fair wins as well where our opponent used graveyard hate to shut down our Throne of the Grim Captain plan and we won by beating down with our motley crew of Merfolk, Vampires, Dinos and Pirates! The deck might actually be good, and it's definitely super fun! If you're looking for something different to try in Standard as we wait for Final Fantasy to release, give it a try!

Anyway, that's all for today. As always, leave your thoughts, ideas, opinions and suggestions in the comments, and you can reach me on Twitter or Bluesky @SaffronOlive, or at SaffronOlive@MTGGoldfish.com.
