Deck Primer / Description
This deck is all about sacrificing your commander and draining your opponents' life. I just put it together so it is still in development, and I haven't played any real games with it yet. It is focused on sorcery and instants, and does not care much about other creatures. It is also light on lands, but has lots of mana rocks, the mana-producing sacrifice outlet Ashnod's Altar, and a mana enchantment Black Market, for 42 mana sources total. It has some card draw to help with not getting enough lands or not finding the right cards at the right time, and even has a few cards that can search the deck.
The plan with this deck is to summon the commander Kokusho, the Evening Star and kill it as many times as possible. Instead of sending it back to the command zone, let it go to the graveyard, so that each opponent loses 5 life and you gain up to 15 life (and maybe more). Do this over and over again until your opponents have 0 life. Just to be clear, since it's what I have, I'm using the original Kokusho, the Evening Star that says "put into a graveyard", but the oracle text simply says "dies". Either way, you only want it to go back to the command zone as a last resort. This deck is full of cards that let you get creatures back from the graveyard. Most of them go to your hand, like Echoing Return, but Lich-Knights' Conquest and Rise from the Grave get it back to the battlefield instead. And Grimoire of the Dead can get more than just one creature. Courier Bat and Gravedigger are creatures that brings other creatures back, and can be used as somewhat repeatable reanimators. Gorex, the Tombshell can also reanimate creatures but it's more complicated. Oversold Cemetery lets you get a creature from the graveyard every turn if you have 4 or more in it. And Mortuary circumvents the graveyard entirely! If you run out of reanimator cards and need to get Kokusho back, you can exile it with Graveyard Shovel or Bojuka Bog, or get it and whatever other cards back with Wand of Vertebrae. I'm not using any cards that make a creature instantly return on death, like Feign Death, because of the specific wording on my version of Kokusho.
There are only a few other creatures in the deck. Loyal Subordinate deals damage if you have Kokusho out at the start of combat. Gavony Unhallowed and Sengir Connoisseur get bonuses when Kokusho dies. Baleful Beholder makes opponents sacrifice an enchantment. Goremand is a sacrifice outlet that also forces opponents to sacrifice a creature. In an emergency, Mobilized District can become a creature too. Defiant Bloodlord is very important, and will let you hit a player directly for every life point you gain when Kokusho, the Evening Star dies. Be careful, because I imagine this will immediately make every player focus on you!
To kill Kokusho, attack opponents with strong creatures on their board, or creatures with deathtouch. If your opponent chooses to take 5 commander damage instead of stopping Kokusho, use one of the many sacrifice outlets like Ashnod's Altar. Most of the sorcery and instant sacrifice cards have another use, like Bone Shards killing another creature, or drawing cards with Village Rites. Try to use them wisely. If Bone Splinters is the only way you could sacrifice Kokusho on your turn, and there are no other creatures on the board you could target, consider saving it until the next turn and leaving Kokusho as a blocker instead. Sacrifice is also the best way to get rid of enchantments like Apathy.
Ideally, you'll get artifacts like Malefic Scythe or Reaper's Talisman early on, to add to the damage you'll be doing with your commander. Hopefully you'll get some of the many mana rocks as well, because this commander costs a lot of mana, especially if you have to let it go to the command zone. Another reason you'll need lots of
mana is for the board wipes. Deadly Tempest destroys all creatures and causes player damage as well. Torment of Hailfire and Pestilence both cause damage to creatures and players based on how much mana you spend, so you could potentially end the game if you can afford it. Study Hall and Unknown Shores can convert some excess
to
. Subterranean Hangar lets you bank an extra
mana between turns to spend later.
There are 2 Liliana planeswalkers in this deck. Liliana, Death's Majesty is another return from the graveyard effect, and her ultimate is a boardwipe for all non-zombies. Liliana Vess lets you tutor a creature from your library, or summon all creatures from all graveyards as her ultimate. Ways to search the library for any card are Diabolic Tutor and Illicit Shipment.
There are many reasons to search the library, like if you need an opportune reanimator or sacrifice card, but there is one sneaky move you can do as well. Exquisite Blood will double the life you gain with Kokusho's death. More importantly, it creates an infinite target opponent & drain life loop with Defiant Bloodlord, that creature I mentioned earlier. Unless someone can interrupt with an instant that gets rid of one of those cards, as soon as an opponent takes damage, you will gain that life, then target any opponent until you drain their life, and repeat until everyone but you is dead. I would like to add Sanguine Bond and Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose as other ways to complete this loop.
Since you should gain a lot of life regularly, don't be worried about paying life with cards like Dark Tutelage or Greed.
Because this deck is so focused on spells, I expect it will be vulnerable to control focused decks. Anything that blocks abilities, especially sacrificing like Tajuru Preserver, will be a problem, but hopefully you can remove that problem. Circle of Protection: Black will totally break this deck. It will also be vulnerable to opponents' creatures because you will not have a blocker a lot of the time. My biggest concern is that once the table decides to focus on you, there won't be much you can do about multiple attackers. Therefore, a good game plan might be to fly under the radar for most of the game, until you can quickly take everyone out with a combo or just plain damage.
While goldfishing with this deck, I was typically able to get some mana rocks early on, and got Kokusho out by turn 4 or 5. By then I always had a sacrifice card and 1 or 2 reanimator cards so I could ge the damage engine going. I'm sure I will have to revise this deck but I'm expecting it to do well, unless people realize what I'm doing early on. I expect I'll need to add creatures and maybe more Swamp. I would like to add Grave Pact and Rise of the Dark Realms. Other cards I'm considering include Activated Sleeper, Malicious Affliction, Skull Storm, Anrakyr the Traveller, Nashi, Moon Sage's Scion, Marshland Bloodcaster, and K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth. Let me know what cards you would add, or what changes you would make to the deck!
