Deck Primer / Description
This list exploits Grolnok, the Omnivore's ridiculous card advantage to put upwards of half of you deck onto the battlefield while building up to win with Thassa's Oracle or Jace, Wielder of Mysteries. You can begin to cast your whole deck almost immediately once Grolnok is on the battlefield with some combination of these creatures:
- Diligent Excavator
- Iceberg Cancrix
- Lotus Cobra
- Doc Aurlock, Grizzled Genius
- Azusa, Lost but Seeking
- Dryad of the Ilysian Grove
- Nissa, Resurgent Animist
- Nylea, Keen-Eyed
- Silverback Elder
These creatures allow you to continue generating mana, playing lands, and milling cards to find and play all of your creatures. In addition, the deck plays a bunch of cheap creatures that mill when entering the battlefield. To continue exiling and playing these cards with Grolnok, you'll need to protect it from your opponents. Normally you might would counterspells or Heroic Intervention for this purpose, but Grolnok doesn't like instants or sorceries. Instead, the deck contains a number of permanents you can play early before playing Grolnok safely on turn four to six:
- Giant's Amulet
- Siren Stormtamer
- Malevolent Hermit
- Mirror Shield
- Swiftfoot Boots
- Mithril Coat
- Plaza of Heroes
- Haywire Mite
Of course, Grolnok being alive isn't of much use if you're dead. To protect your life total, the deck offers a bunch of great brawl permanents:
- Witness Protection
- Eaten by Piranhas
- Brazen Borrower
- The One Ring
- Illithid Harvester
- Horned Loch-Whale
While the groups above are the main components that allow the deck to function, there are ton of other synergies with Grolnok that can enable really strong board presence or act as alternate win cons. For example, Grolnok with Jace, the Perfected Mind targeting yourself to mill 15 cards is downright unfair with any of:
If you have the collection or wild cards for it, try this deck out on Arena. Just don't try to play this on mobile. It can be difficult to find the card you're looking for out of thirty on a laptop, let alone on a seven-inch touchscreen.
