Modern Mayhem: Infect (Modern, Magic Online)
This week we've got something for infect lovers out there!
Gameplan
As opposed to the normal gameplan of trying to deal 20 damage, we only need to deal 10! Not saying that you won't win a fair share of games with just a Noble Hierarch plus a bunch of pump spells but usually it's with a Glistener Elf, Blighted Agent, and Inkmoth Nexus.
These three threats are usually what we're going to be pumping with all of our spells. The nice thing about this style of deck is that it punishes noninteractive decks and can just win out of nowhere if not respected. The other thing that is great about Inkmoth Nexus is its ability to dodge something like a Supreme Verdict or any kind of sorcery speed board wipe. A thing of note is that you shouldn't feel rushed into a spot to kill the opponent right away as you can just get away with some chip damage and wait for the turn where the opponent is either exhausted of removal spells due to our protection spells like Blossoming Defense and Vines of Vastwood or they've tapped out. Whatever you do, don't go all in until you actually have to because you can play the waiting game.
Why Infect Now?
To be honest, I wouldn't normally play this style of deck but after a recent addition, it now hits my checkboxes in a deck I like.
-Plays Blue
-Plays Counterspells ( Spell Pierce haha)
-Plays Teferi, Time Raveler
If Teferi ever resolves against a deck with interactive spells, the game is usually over as we now know the opponent can't remove our threat when we go all in with our pump spells. There have been many spells before Teferi like Monastery Siege and Wild Defiance to try to make life a little bit harder for interacting with us but there hasn't been anything like Teferi as this just shuts off all of their spells and can serve as a way to bounce a Chalice of the Void or any other problematic creature, artifact, or enchantment in the way. The only thing in question is how many of these should we play? I started at four and then worked my way down and yes, so far I think the white splash is worth it.
Conclusion
Now that we have Teferi, I think I might actually give Infect more reps as I think its ability to steal games against a ton of matchups is important since modern's meta can get pretty wild. I also wasn't able to get any cards from Modern Horizons but so far, Scale Up is the truth and absurdly powerful spell in this deck. Be prepared to face this deck a solid amount once others can get their hands on some Scale Up,
If you have any ideas or sweet decks you want to see for Modern Mayhem feel free to reach out to me!
See you at the next one!
