This Week in Legacy: Sticker-B-Gone!

Howdy folks! It's time yet again for another edition of This Week in Legacy! I'm your host, Joe Dyer, and this week we have a Banned and Restricted Announcement to talk about with the banning of ALL STICKER AND ATTRACTION CARDS! Because of this change, we won't be discussing any of the Challenges over the past week. We will however be discussing a paper event from over the weekend that looked great.

Without further ado, let's dive right in!

Banned and Restricted Announcement 5/13/2024 - STICKERS GONE!

This past week had a pretty interesting Banned and Restricted announcement for Legacy. The last go around, we had been told that Wizards was working on a solution for the Stickers and Attractions mechanics from Unfinity and how those cards interacted with tournament gameplay. Well, the solution here is pretty solution-y.

All cards that utilized Stickers and Attractions in all non-Commander Eternal formats (so Legacy, Vintage, and Pauper) are banned from the format. You can find the full announcement here. Let's see what Wizards had to say.

The biggest takeaway here is that Wizards recognizes how problematic this mechanic was in paper gameplay, and even extended to MTGO where Daybreak had to develop a custom implementation of the card to get it to function as close to the paper world as much as possible. With Stickers/Attractions slated to never come to MTGO in the first place, having a divide between paper and MTGO is really rough. This does mean that "Name Sticker" Goblin is also banned in those formats as well to keep things in line with the Wizards ban announcement.

While this wasn't the change I actually expected (I very much expected a rules change in paper for the mechanic), I am reasonably okay with them banning these cards. The big loss here is of course the Turbo Muxus Goblins deck, which functionally dies as the Sticker Goblin was a huge part of what made that deck so explosive. What this means for Goblins is unknown, but it's likely they move back to a Vial based version. The Red Stompy decks also can kind of step in here and fill that void, due in part to cards like Broadside Bombardiers.

They also mention that it's unlikely that Wizards will test the waters again with this kind of partial legality. I think this is fine. While there's some cards that do work within the rules of regular Magic, Stickers/Attractions really should not have been one of those things. Cards like Embiggen or Saw in Half though are reasonably fine cards to have exist.

In addition, they also talked about Legacy overall.

I did ultimately sort of suspect no other changes to Legacy in this update, as Modern Horizons 3 is on the well, horizon. However, it is nice to know that they are looking at cards like Orcish Bowmasters and also Grief and will ultimately get to re-assess at a future date, but I also agree that waiting to see what MH3 brings makes the most sense overall. We can see what cards from that format could shift things, and if nothing shifts UB Reanimator than decide from there. I'm a big fan of organically allowing metagames to evolve and change, rather than shaking things up for the sake of shaking things up.

What are your thoughts on this change? Let me know in the comments below.

Dice City Games Legacy 7K RUMBLE AGAINST CANCER

This past weekend was an event ran by Dice City Games and spearheaded by our good friend Jarvis Yu, Ryan Freeburger, Kevin Brenneman, and David Sittinger. It was a Legacy 7K held at the Silver Branch Brewery with benefits going directly to cancer research. Quite honestly, this was an amazing event, and while I didn't get to go, I was definitely thrilled for all of my friends who were there. 92 players showed up to battle it out in Legacy, all doing some small part to rumble against cancer.

This event was also streamed live via the Dice City Games Twitch channel, and I'm sure the coverage will end up making it to YouTube at some point.

You can find all of the decklists for this event here and the data sheet here. As noted, there were 97 players and the event was ran using TopDeck.gg!

UB Reanimator was the largest metagame share by far in this entire event and it's win rate was quite good with a 57.14% non-mirror win rate. D&T was also very popular here, partially due because the card Pre-War Formalwear in paper is quite strong in that deck.

Let's take a look at the Top 8.

Deck Name Placing MTGO Username
UB Reanimator 1st David Long
UB Reanimator 2nd Paul E Lynch Jr
Death and Taxes 3rd John Ryan Hamilton
Dredge 4th Evan Rabinowitsch
UB Reanimator 5th Jack Pullman
ANT 6th Matthew Maciejewski
Black Midrange 7th Stefan Vastek
Maverick 8th Harry Hackett

UB Reanimator was very popular in the Top 8 here, and both the winner and the finalist were on the deck. There was also D&T by our good friend John Ryan Hamilton as well as stuff like Dredge and even Maverick!

All the decklists can be viewed via the TopDeck.gg website, and this definitely looked like a stellar event. Maybe another one of these can happen in the future!
